As Christmas approaches, many families finish decorating their Christmas tree with a star. For Christians, this ornament often recalls the Star of Bethlehem in the story of the Magi’s visit to Jesus.

Here we explore that story, distinguish biblical details from later traditions and consider how the star became a familiar Christmas decoration.

The Star in Christmas Traditions Today

Placing a star on the tree can be the final moment in a shared decorating activity. Some households use an angel or another ornament instead, and each family can choose its own custom.

The value of the activity lies in spending time together. A familiar decoration may bring back memories or become part of a new tradition, without needing to follow a particular rule.

Children can help choose decorations for the Christmas tree at a safe height. An adult should place a high tree-topper using stable footing; lifting a child towards the top of a large tree is unnecessary.

"A

Taking part can give children a sense of contributing to a family activity. Explain the ornament’s meaning in a way that suits their age and your household’s beliefs.

These occasions may become happy memories, but there is no need to create a perfect scene. A small tree and a simple handmade star can be just as enjoyable.

What Does the Star of Bethlehem Mean to Christians?

In Matthew’s Gospel, a star is associated with the Magi’s journey to honour Jesus. The familiar image of three kings belongs to later tradition: Matthew does not state their number or call them kings.

"A

For Christian readers, the star can symbolise guidance towards Christ. This is a religious interpretation of the story, rather than an instruction to look for a particular modern star in the sky.

Matthew describes visitors from the east who recognise the star as a sign connected with the birth of the king of the Jews. Their journey forms part of the Gospel’s account of the Nativity.

Why Is It Called the Star of Bethlehem?

The star’s name connects it with Bethlehem, where the story places Jesus. Matthew describes the visitors finding the child with Mary in a house; the Gospel does not say that they followed a comet with a long tail to a stable.

Bethlehem is the town associated with Jesus’s birth, not a neighbourhood called Bethlehem within another unnamed town. The expression Star of Bethlehem reflects that connection.

Astronomical explanations have been proposed, including planetary conjunctions and other celestial events. None should be presented here as a proven identification of the star described in the Gospel.

Within Christian Christmas imagery, the star remains a symbol of guidance, hope and the journey towards Jesus.

What Gifts Did the Magi Bring?

"A

Matthew names three gifts, but gives neither the visitors’ names nor their number. Caspar, Balthazar and Melchior are names supplied by later Christian tradition.
