Christmas Hotels: Seven Checks Before You Book

Spending Christmas in a hotel can take some of the work out of organising the celebration, but an attractive photograph does not tell you what your booking includes. This guide offers seven criteria for comparing accommodation. It is not a list of hotels we have visited or verified packages; it is a way to ask useful questions before paying.

1. A location that fits your itinerary

Check the address on a map and work out the journeys to the activities you want to enjoy. A secluded hotel may suit a relaxing break but require a car or private transport. Check how you will arrive and leave over the holidays, when services may operate differently.

2. Activities confirmed for your dates

Ask for the current seasonal programme and check that it covers your stay. Photographs from previous years do not guarantee workshops, music or a visit from Father Christmas this year. Ask which activities need booking, have age limits or cost extra.

3. Festive meals, drinks and dietary needs

Confirm which meals are included, their dates and times, and whether you need to reserve a table. For a UK break, ask specifically about Christmas Day lunch; arrangements overseas may centre on Christmas Eve instead. Discuss allergies directly with the hotel and ask how they are handled: a general menu does not confirm cross-contact precautions.

4. Rooms and family comfort

Check the actual bed arrangement, permitted occupancy and whether connecting rooms are available. If travelling with children, do not assume an activity programme provides childcare. Ask about supervision, whether parents must remain, cots and any additional costs.

5. Accessibility and peace and quiet

Describe your needs precisely: step-free access, a lift, an adapted bathroom, distance to the restaurant or a room away from the party venue. Request written confirmation. The word “accessible” alone does not establish whether a space meets an individual guest’s needs.

6. Total cost and cancellation terms

Add together accommodation, extra meals, drinks, parking, transport and activities. Compare offers for the same dates and number of guests. Read payment deadlines, amendment and cancellation terms, and what happens if the festive programme changes. A package is not automatically cheaper than separate bookings.

7. Recent evidence and a documented booking

Read recent reviews for recurring comments about cleanliness, service and noise. Confirm the establishment’s identity and official booking channels before sending money. Keep confirmation of dates, room category, inclusions and agreed terms.

A simple message to send the hotel

“I would like to stay from [date] to [date], with [number] adults and [number] children aged [ages]. Could you confirm the total price, included meals and activities, room arrangement and cancellation terms? We also need [specific requirement].” Replace the fields before sending and compare the answers, not just the photographs.
